What is Obalon?
Are you struggling to lose weight through conventional means of diet and exercise? You are not alone. Millions of people find that eating nutritiously and exercising on a regular basis only go so far in losing weight, leaving them hovering above their ultimate goal. Fortunately, individuals who can relate to this issue now have an effective solution in the Obalon Balloon System—a new, non-surgical weight loss technology that is ideal for patients seeking to lose approximately 20–50 pounds.
Offered by Philadelphia plastic surgeon Louis P. Bucky, MD, as one of only two plastic surgery practices in the country, the Obalon Balloon System is the first—and currently the only—swallowable gastric balloon weight loss treatment approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for individuals 22 and older. This innovative bariatric technique consists of three lightweight balloons that are ingested as capsules over the course of a few months. Once expanded, the balloons work to facilitate weight loss by taking up space within the stomach, enabling patients to become fuller while eating less. The balloons will be in place in the stomach for a total of six months, but nutritional counsel by a metabolic physician and additional beauty services by Dr. Bucky’s team will be included for an entire year.
The Obalon Balloon System is intended to be an adjunct to a healthy diet and exercise regimen for women and men who have not found weight loss success through these efforts alone. This non-surgical bariatric method has helped numerous individuals with a BMI approximately between 30 and 40 overcome being overweight and change their lives for the better.

Within six months I learned so much about best practices and how I was going to maintain it afterward. That six-month period I learned a lot of about nutrition, about fitness, about portion control. I've done diets but I never took it seriously as much as when I had the balloons.
The procedure itself was easy. I was in and out in maybe 10 minutes at the most. It was fast. I didn’t feel nervous at all. Once it's in, you don't feel anything.
Am I a Candidate for Obalon?
- Be at least 22 years old
- Have an appropriate Body Mass Index (BMI) near 30-40
- Be actively attempting to lose weight through diet and exercise
- Be committed to maintaining an overall healthy lifestyle during and after treatment
At the time of your consultation, Dr. Bucky’s associate, Dr. Ran Stark, and his nursing team, will discuss this criteria and explain the Obalon treatment in great detail. They will also identify various factors that may affect candidacy, such as problems with swallowing, previous bariatric procedures, current or prior medical conditions, and more. Once a thorough evaluation is performed and all requisites are reviewed, we will determine whether or not Obalon is right for you.
How Does Obalon Work?
Three lightweight balloons are ingested as capsules over the course of a few months.
Once expanded, the balloons work to facilitate weight loss by taking up space within the stomach, enabling patients to become fuller while eating.
The balloons will be in place in the stomach for a total of six months, but nutritional counsel by a metabolic physician and additional beauty services by Dr. Bucky’s team will be included for an entire year.
The Obalon Treatment Process
To begin the Obalon treatment, patients are instructed to swallow a small capsule attached to a small tube. This can be done easily with water, and no sedation or anesthesia is necessary. Once in place inside the stomach, the capsule dissolves naturally and the balloon unfolds. Dr. Bucky’s team then carefully inflates the balloon with air until the right volume is achieved (about the size of a small orange). One month later, this process is repeated with a second balloon capsule, and then again with a third balloon capsule at the discretion of Dr. Bucky’s team. The entire Obalon Balloon placement lasts six months, at which point Dr. Bucky and his staff will deflate and remove all three balloons endoscopically.
Throughout the course of treatment, it is imperative that a healthy diet and exercise program be maintained, as the Obalon Balloon System is meant to be an adjunct to these weight loss endeavors. To assist with this, Dr. Bucky will collaborate with other healthcare professionals—such as dieticians and fitness coaches—to develop appropriate meal and exercise plans based on your needs and goals on a routine basis. Our team will be here every step of the way to guide and support you during your weight loss treatment, and our aim is to ensure you are motivated and prepared to continue good lifestyle habits long into the future for lasting results.
